About 1in8b life

1in8b life is a free browser life simulation about the billions of different lives that begin around the world.

How the life simulation works

Choose whether the birthplace draw is weighted by country birth share or population. The simulation creates a fictional life with choices at key ages. A simplified model uses country-level averages as context; it is not a life-table forecast or a prediction about you.

The country snapshot covers 172 countries. Birth shares draw on the UN World Population Prospects; life expectancy, under-five mortality, and GDP per capita at purchasing-power parity link to relevant World Bank indicator series. These values are a fixed app snapshot, not real-time data.

The site stores life-session progress to keep the live activity count up to date. Explore country birth statistics or read what “1 in 8 billion” means.
